Ohio Hopewell: Ancient Crossroads of the American Midwest

Images

Over the past century hundreds of photos have been taken which relate to the Field Museum’s Hopewell collection. The images available here include photographs from Moorehead’s excavation in the late 1800’s, professional artifact photos taken for various projects, and photos of exhibit installations from throughout the museum’s history. Of all of the Hopewell photos, around half have been converted to a digital format, which are available through our historic excavation albums, the collection of images from The Hopewell Mound Group: Its People and Their Legacy, and through this gallery. With additional funding support, we hope to complete digitization of the remainder of the Hopewell photos at the Field Museum. Please be aware that there may be errors and inconsistencies in the image data. We are in the process of fixing those errors.

Copper celt. Copper axe (56018) Hopewell (AD 100 _ÑÐ 400). Ohio Copper axes or celts like this one show no signs of wear, leading archaeologists to believe that they held symbolic meaning. As with Colombian redstone and greenstone axes, Hopewell leaders may have used copper axes to indicate their power to clear land and build monumental ceremonial centers.

Mica Eagle eagle foot [or talon] effigy. Mica bird claw (replica) Hopewell (AD 100 - 400) Ohio This beautiful bird claw holds clues about Hopewell society. The material - mica from the Appalachian Mountains - shows that the Hopewell interacted with people beyond Ohio. Because archaeologists find many objects like these, we know that some people in Hopewell societies specialized in craftmaking, in addition to farming. (110131)
